Do You Have Vertigo or Dizziness?

vertigo-dizziness-migraineVertigo and Dizziness affect a large number of adults and these two terms are often used interchangeably. In Objective Vertigo, the sufferer feels the environment is spinning around them whereas in Subjective Vertigo, the suffer feels that they are in motion – either way, vertigo is very debilitating and disorienting. Dizziness is a feeling of light-headedness, almost as if about to faint without the sensation of movement felt in vertigo.

If you are suffering from either condition, Chiropractic can help with safe, effective and proven methods that do not involve the use of prescription medications of any kind. Please call us at the Sleeping Better Clinic on 9510 7700 to book your appointment today.

We will perform a thorough initial assessment, including neurological and orthopaedic testing in order to understand the exact cause of dizziness or vertigo in your case. We can then plan a course of treatment specifically for you. In rare cases, you may need referral to a neurologist, but most of the common causes of dizziness and vertigo respond well to the gentle and effective conservative care provided by a Chiropractor.

What is Vertigo?

Our brains receive input from our different sensory systems in order to help us make sense of the world around us and our position within it. Our vision, our inner ears, our nervous system and our relationship with gravity all help us to maintain our balance and equilibrium.

Vertigo happens when one of these areas is not functioning correctly, affecting the flow of information to and from the brain.

What are the Symptoms of Vertigo?

As mentioned, Vertigo feels as if you (or the world around you) is in motion. Symptoms can also include:

  • Unusual eye movements or visual impairment
  • Feeling (or being) sick and sweating
  • Hearing loss or ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Slurred speech
  • Feelings of weakness

While these symptoms may only last for a short time – a few moments to a few hours, they can also be chronic, making everyday life a misery.

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)

This is a type of Vertigo where Chiropractic is particularly helpful. It is the cause of around 50%-70% of all cases of dizziness in older patients in particular – and around 20% of cases in general.

In younger people, the cause is usually trauma but it can happen after a viral infection and in older people, simply as a result of the aging process.

It is usually brought on by a sudden head movement or moving the head in a certain direction. This can include tipping the head back or forward (looking up at the stars at night, for example) or could happen when laying down or turn over in bed. It can also make the sufferer feel out of balance when standing still or during walking.

Despite the fact that it is such a common cause, it frequently goes undiagnosed and the symptoms are treated with powerful sedative drugs with other, unwanted side effects. A Chiropractor can give the correct treatment to get rid of this distressing condition speedily.  Please don’t rely on taking medication to treat or mask the symptoms, call us today and let us discover the root of the problem so that you can get on with your life again.
